New Tablet Show woes

Long-time listeners of my podcasts are familiar with the original Tablet PC Show which I did with co-host Marc Orchant for The Podcast Network (TPN) for some months. A couple of months ago Marc and I decided to take the show off TPN and and relaunch it independently which has been very successful. A little over a week ago TPN released The Tablet PC Show with host Perry Reed and since it is still in my podcast feeds I gave it a listen. Perry is a great guy and a long-time mobile device fan on Pocket PC Thoughts and I was happy to see him give it a go with this new show.

Unfortunately, the show was released showing the hosts to be Marc Orchant and I which created confusion among listeners. I heard from several people who were confused as to our participation in the new show and wondering if Marc and I were not doing our OnTheRun with Tablet PCs podcast any longer. I immediately posted a comment to the TPN blog pointing out the host information was not correct and asked them to fix it for the next show. Perry indicated he needed help to fix it but it would happen. I told him it was the RSS enclosure tags that needed to be fixed.

TPN released a second show a couple of days ago and once again the podcast shows Marc and I to be the hosts, extending the confusion with listeners not to mention the fact that iTunes search is screwed up as a result. I posted a comment to this second show asking Perry and TPN to remove both shows until they get the host information corrected and then re-release the two shows. This would benefit both their listeners and ours and make sure that no search engines were returning incorrect information. I promptly received an email from Perry stating they were working on it and hoped to have a fix for it soon.

A check of the TPN site this morning shows that both podcasts are still being distributed with the improper information and my comment to Perry is not showing because they are not releasing it from moderation. This means only they can see my comment and not visitors to their blog. I don't like being a bad guy but this is not cool and it looks like they are trying to keep this information from their listeners. Since my comment is not published as it should have been so at least I can inform their show listeners that Marc and I are not in fact hosting the show I have no recourse but to inform our listeners here on my blog. Once again, I am asking TPN publicly to take both shows down until they fix the information and then re-release them. Continuing to deliberately offer the shows for download shows a disrespect to my original two requests that they take it down and fix it. There is no need for them to continue to offer the shows for download and perpetuate the improper impression the error is giving to listeners.

TPN, please remove both shows until a fix is in place. Thank you.

The Tablet PC Show #24- Mike Jetter interview

The Tablet PC Show #24 (MP3 - 13.2MB - 38min)
LISTEN HERE

Intro- Marc Orchant & James Kendrick

Tabletpc_album_cover_7Marc and I sat down with Mike Jetter, the founder and CTO of Mindjet, the company who, as Marc put it, produces the best mind mapping program on the planet- MindManager. Regular listeners are familiar with how much both Marc and I love MindManager and we were very excited to have Mike come on the show and give us some good information about the upcoming new version 6 of the mind mapping program. Mike gives us the scoop about all the new features such as integration with PowerPoint, Visio and Excel, and a host of other features you’ll have to listen to the show to hear about. We asked Mike how Mindjet came to support the Tablet PC so completely since version X5 and his insights on using MindManager on the Tablet PC are very interesting. You will especially want to give the show a listen if you are a current MindManager user, and if you don’t use it now you will want to give the free trial a test drive after you hear the interview. Thanks to Mike Jetter for spending time with us, Hobie Swan (Mindjet) for setting it up, and to you listeners for your continued support of the show.

Next Tablet PC Show guest- Mike Jetter!

I'll let you in on a little not-so-well-kept secret– Tablet PC Show co-host Marc Orchant and I are big fans of MindManager.  It is simply the best mind mapping program on the planet, and when you throw in the outstanding ink support and Tablet PC interface magic it is easy to understand why.  We are very excited to announce we will be interviewing Mike Jetter, CTO of Mindjet,  for the next Tablet PC Show podcast.  Mindjet has just announced a new version of MindManager and this will be a great chance for listeners to hear all about the new goodies it brings.  In the meantime do you have any questions you'd like us to ask him?

LISTEN HERE

00:00 Intro- Marc Orchant & James Kendrick

Tabletpc_album_cover_6Marc and I had a fun conversation with Tracy Hooten, the driving force behind The Student Tablet PC blog. The Student Tablet PC blog is a wonderful source of information for students using Tablet PCs but non-students can find a wealth of information, too. Tracy tells us how she likes her new Toshiba M200 with the wide-angle high resolution screen and other topics related to her usage of the Tablet at school. We talk about scanning textbooks and other large works into the Tablet and Tracy gives us some insight into the new beta version of PDF Annotator. We had a little problem with Skype so please excuse some annoying noise problems that crop up from time to time. Enjoy the show and leave us some feedback.

How to set up GoBinder to organize digital books

Tracy Hooten has written another good article explaining how she has configured GoBinder to make all the textbooks she has scanned into the program easily available for use in the classroom.  Tracy routinely scans her textbooks into GoBinder for easy searching, annotating and reference and students will find it time well spent to have a look at this article.  BTW, a little birdie told me that Tracy may make an appearance on The Tablet PC Show very, very soon.

Eric Rice's USB microphone

In the current Tablet PC Show podcast Eric Rice mentioned the USB gooseneck microphone he uses for recording podcasts and I’ve already gotten several requests for more information.  The microphone is from DVForge and is the MicFlex, a USB microphone that draws all power from the USB port.  It works on both Macs and Windows PCs and the recommendation from Eric Rice (Mr. Audio) is a strong one.  Specs:

MicflexMax Height= 22"
Diameter= 4"
Freq. Response= 35Hz-18KHz
Sample Rate= 48KHz
Sample Depth= 16-bit
Power= USB bus powered

If you have followed audioblogging and videoblogging for any length of time you are familiar with the work of Eric Rice. He is the founder of Audioblog and he’s been producing audio shows for four years and done it all on the Mac platform. He recently made Tablet PC news when he announced the purchase of a Toshiba R15 Tablet PC and Marc Orchant and I knew we had to get Eric on the show. This show is the Eric Rice interview and I have to tell you we had a great chat with him about the Toshiba, the Tablet PC in general and we even broached the subject of a future Mac Tablet. Enjoy the show and as always we love to hear from you so leave us your comments on the blog. LISTEN HERE

Tabletpc_album_cover_4Marc Orchant is back this week as co-host and we celebrate this special milestone 20th show with special guest Nicole Simon from Germany. Nicole is an uber blogger with a number of blogs in both English and German as well has her own podcasts. She just received her brand new Lenovo ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC and found the out of box experience to be less than desired so we brought her on the show to let everyone know what she thinks. We have a great (long) discussion in spite of repeated problems with Skype and covered all manner of topics from spamware, accessories, screen protectors and many programs. Give it a listen and you’re bound to find something to take away from this show. Nicole even got to rant about the inability to install the Experience Pack and Education Pack on her German ThinkPad. She is also no doubt the first person to describe the ThinkPad Tablet PC as a “cutie”. Thanks to Nicole for chatting with us and we hope you enjoy the show.

Marc Orchant was away but guest co-host Greg Hughes graciously stepped in and we have an action packed show. Greg fills us in on the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet PC that he’s been lucky enough to use for the past month so anyone interested in this fine convertible (or those anxiously awaiting delivery) will get some good information to take away. After the break we shift focus to the hot topic of the week, WindowsVista Beta 1, and round up the information that is starting to emerge from those brave enough to install it on a Tablet PC. Enjoy the show and as always we appreciate your feedback! (We missed you Marc!)

LISTEN HERE

Tabletpc_album_cover_2Welcome listeners joining us from the iTunes Podcast library! You’ll find a great source of information about the Tablet PC here on The Tablet PC Show on The Podcast Network. This is a very special Tablet PC Show #15 as Josh Einstein of EinsteinTech, the developer of the Tablet Enhancements for Outlook (TEO) joins us for a fun discussion about his program, his Tablet PCs and a host of other topics. TEO is a program that corrects a function missing from Outlook by adding natural ink capability that turns Outlook into a totally ink-enabled program for the Tablet PC. Josh bit the bullet and even installed Skype so we could do this interview and we thank him for that, even though he is not a fan of Skype. Marc and I do our best to embarrass Josh with gushing praise for the program that both of us use daily and Josh gives us insights into his development of the next version of TEO, version 3.0, and shares some of the upcoming goodies he is adding to an already solid program. Josh tells us what it was like to leave his “real” job and develop software full time, something that TEO users are already benefiting from. Sit back and enjoy the show and listen carefully if you are looking for information about the timing of the next version of TEO. Think voice recording, Skype integration and auto call logging in Outlook Journal. Oh, Marc challenges Microsoft to buy TEO and roll it into native Outlook. Bring it on!

Marc Orchant is traveling this week and couldn’t do the show with me but have no fear he will be back soon. Today’s show is a special one as I welcome two attorneys who are successful using Tablet PCs in their law practices. Joining me on the show are Matthew Buchanan and Douglas Sorocco who practice Intellectual Property and Patent law in Toledo, Ohio and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, respectively. Matt and Doug have incorporated the Tablet PC into successful use in their daily routines and we spend a lot of time discussing their usage of the Tablet. We have a great conversation that covers the software tools they use and how they leverage the Tablet to maximize productivity in their work. We had such a good conversation that I am happy to invite you to listen in and I am sure you will find good stuff to take away with you. If you listen carefully you will hear the first known instance of me losing my voice during a podcast, but Doug and Matt covered for me very nicely. :)

Matt tells us how they use Dragon NaturallySpeaking in their office in addition to making audio recordings with OneNote which I found very interesting, and the discussion of using MindManager for brainstorming sessions is very good. Doug discusses the new ActiveWords InkPad beta for the Tablet PC which has just been released and can’t say enough good things about the combo on the Tablet. Enjoy the show and don’t miss what I think is a great message to Tablet OEMs- Doug points out he decided a Tablet PC would be beneficial when he attended a tech show for lawyers earlier this year and HP had provided tc1100 Tablet PCs for the attendees to use. Great marketing tool that apparently works so lets see more of it. Thanks Matt and Doug for spending time with me for the show. Visit their blogs, Promote the Progress and phosita, where you’ll find interesting information about IP law and also Tablet PC information.

NOTE: I apologize for the audio difficulties that were a result of a bad Skype connection.

The Tablet PC Show #9- Eric Mack edition

The Tablet PC Show #9 - 21 May 2005 (45 min)
MP3 - 16.2MB

Eric Mack opened his brand new Toshiba Tecra M4 Tablet PC yesterday and shared his experience on his blog with pictures and audio recordings that chronicled his delight during the process. One of his podcast clips even has yours truly as I Skyped him to see how the unveiling was progressing and he recorded our short discussion. Late last night Eric sat down with Marc Orchant and me and the three of us talked about Eric’s first impressions about the M4. Eric provided us with the first hands-on information about the M4 that I have seen and his insights should prove invaluable to anyone considering the high-end Tablet PC from Toshiba. Give it a listen and see what Eric thinks so far.

Some highlights from the interview- screen viewing angle seems pretty narrow, questions about the screen protector and glare, speakers sound fine in slate configuration and the fan noise is not bad. You’ll just have to listen to the show for the rest.

Watch for The Tablet PC Show- Eric Mack interview

Eric_mack_m4Eric Mack opened his brand new Toshiba Tecra M4 Tablet PC yesterday and shared his experience on his blog with pictures and audio recordings that chronicled his delight during the process.  One of his podcast clips even has yours truly as I Skyped him to see how the unveiling was progressing and he recorded our short discussion.  Late last night Eric sat down with Marc Orchant and me and the three of us talked about Eric's first impressions about the M4.  I am doing the post-production on the recording as we speak and hope to have it released on The Podcast Network later today.

Some highlights from the interview- screen viewing angle seems pretty narrow, speakers sound fine in slate configuration and the fan noise is not bad.  You'll just have to listen to the show for the rest.

Quick tips for Eric Mack:  write in cursive, it works best for most people.  Undock the TIP.  You cannot train the handwriting recognition as you stated in one of your recordings (you won't need to when you get some practice with it).  Spend some time with speech recognition, as a productivity consultant you will find that time well spent.  Download and install the Experience Pack as soon as you can (if it's not pre-installed).

MindManager for making show notes

I have been a fan of MindManager and mind mapping for some time but I have to admit I am just scratching the surface finding new uses for the great tool.  MindManager is so stimulating for the creative process and is even more so when used on a Tablet PC and letting the ink flow naturally.  I have written in the past about using OneNote for doing the preparatory work for the two podcasts I am involved with but with the integration of the HP tc1100 into my routine it seemed high time to give MindManager a try to prepare for the current Tablet PC Show.  Using MindManager made it so easy to collect my thoughts and organize the topics I wanted to mention on the show.  I thought you might be interested in seeing this mind map so here it is:

Tablet PC Show #7 is available

A special show with a special guest, Marc Orchant and I had the pleasure to sit down (in three time zones) with a member of the First Family of the Tablet PC, Lora Heiny. Lora is well known to most everyone involved in the Tablet PC community and we had a wonderful conversation that covered a lot of ground. In the interview we find out how many web sites and blogs the First Family is directly involved with (more than two dozen) and Lora fills us in on all the fun things shown at WinHEC including the convertible Tablet with the sliding screen, Bill Gates’ UMPC and the Intel Entertainment slate. Marc wants an Auxilliary Display and Lora tells us all about the prototype she saw at WinHEC.  We also talk about some of the newest Tablet PCs that have been recently announced and how the different choices confronting the prospective consumer meet anyone’s needs. Marc and I promise not to use the term "laptop" in future podcasts.  :)   We hope you enjoy the show and maybe if we’re really nice we can get Lora to come back in the future. Special thanks as usual to One Egg Ticket for the great theme music. :)

Chris Pratley on note flags in OneNote

Chris Pratley must be listening to The Tablet PC Show as Marc Orchant and I recently discussed the utility of using note flags in OneNote.  Chris has written a typically useful article on his blog that explains how to unleash the full power of flags and the flag summary view for tracking your ideas and entries across multiple note pages.  This article is a must read for OneNote users who want to maximize their productivity with the great note taking program.

The Tablet PC Show #4 is online!

Marc Orchant is back as co-host and Tablet mayhem ensues. MindManager is one of the main topics of the day as we discuss unusual ways mind maps can be useful. OneNote tips and tricks that can be used on any computer are covered including a screen clipping tool for non-Tablets. The podcast is rounded out with a good source of information about Tablets and information about a good free program that now works properly for the ink enabled. We hope you enjoy this show as much as we did recording it and feel free to leave feedback, suggestions and comments on The Tablet PC Show blog. This is really your show and we need you to tell us what you want to hear on future shows.

Exciting happenings on The Tablet PC Show

Keep your podcatcher warmed up this week as there are a couple of fun things in store for you listeners. The next full TabletPC Show with guest co-host Marc Orchant is in post production and should be out in the next day or two. Marc and I had a lot of fun doing the show and I think you’ll like the results.

Artragetitle

There is also a special edition of the show that should appear this week that you will enjoy. I did a short show with two guests- Cameron Reilly of TPN (you know him) and Matt Fox-Wilson of Ambient Design. Ambient is the development company in New Zealand that produces the amazing program for the Tablet PC, Art Rage. In case you missed it Art Rage was voted #1 in the Microsoft developer’s “Does your app think in ink?” contest.  Ambient’s first place finish in that competition netted them a check for a cool $100,000 so it was a very big deal and well deserved. Listen to the interview to hear Cam and I fawn all over Matt and his incredible program. :)  If you'd like to see what can be created with Art Rage check out their online gallery of artwork that users have submitted of their creations.

So check The TabletPC Show site on The Podcast Network often for these next two shows- they’re worth the wait.
