How do you take your WWAN? Connected devices want to know

Wwanpollresults_2

We asked and you responded. I personally take my WWAN with cream, sugar and a healthy dose of HSDPA over USB, but clearly there's some folks that tether. USB is great if you use multiple devices while tethering offers the same advantage plus a potential cost savings. There's quite a few folks that want an integrated 3G connection which is certainly less obtrusive, but won't help if you do use multiple devices. Thanks for sharing your responses!

Did you vote in the WWAN poll?

Wwanpoll We kicked this one off last week and I'll close it out in a day or two. With so many ways to add speedy WWAN or 3G cellular data functionality, which do you prefer? I'm still sold on a USB modem; yes, it can be bulky and not as elegant as internal solutions, but it allows me to use my data plan on practically every device I own. Maybe you're happy with a PC Card or ExpressCard, or perhaps you just want to tether your 3G phone... let us know! View the original post and give a vote.

WWAN choices: what's your preferred form factor?

A few months back, we ran a poll asking which integrated radio you'd prefer in your mobile device: cellular wireless WAN or WiFi. Now that James just switched from a PC Card to an ExpressCard for his EV-DO account, I thought I'd pose a similar poll that focuses solely on WWAN. You've got several choices, right? There's integrated WWAN that can only be used with the single device it's in. There's the old standby of PC Card for devices with a PCMCIA card slot. The new ExpressCard form factor offers connectivity options for newer devices. Then there's the near universal approach of USB and of course, in some cases, you can tether a 3G phone to your device via USB cable or wirelessly through Bluetooth.

Pros and cons abound and your choice will obviously vary on your device and your needs. I opted for the USB route with my new 875U AirCard because I want the freedom to use my connection across nearly all of my devices. How about you? What's the preferred form factor and why? Give a vote and then follow up in the comments.

Apple iPhone vs. HTC Touch: poll results

Iphone_vs_touch_results

I took out my trusty abacus and counted all of the votes....there were a few hanging chads too, but we've triple-checked the results and here you go. Part of me is surprised that the HTC Touch won out on this particular question, simply because the Apple iPhone offers more touch functionality overall and has that typical sexy Apple design. Then again, I suspect that our reader base is more Windows and Windows Mobile-centric, so perhaps this came as no surprise.

Oh, and for the 15 of you that "like to live large", feel free to send me any of your throwaway devices. Now that I'm a full-time blogger, the gadget fund is waaaaay low. ;)

Apple iPhone or HTC Touch: last call on the poll

Whenever I remember (sometime tomorrow), I'll be closing our most recent poll, so if you haven't voted yet it's last call. Of course, I could forget until Wednesday too, but..... ;) Anyway, here's your chance to put in a vote for either the Apple iPhone or the HTC Touch: if you had to pick one today, which would it be? I'm surprised at how close this one is!

Apple iPhone or HTC Touch: which would you choose?

At this point, I think we know all there is to know about the Apple iPhone. Apple could pull "one more thing" out of their pocket, but I don't think so this time. We've also heard about and seen video of the HTC Touch which does put a new face on Windows Mobile along with new touch functionality. There's no multi-touch (or it would have been called "The HTC Multi-Touch", right?) but it's a step forward.

Let's assume either of these phones were available in your area right now. Think about your mobile device needs and then vote to tell us which you'd pick. If you've got compelling reasons for your choice, leave 'em in the comments!

If you were in the market for a new phone, which would you buy?

Integrated radio poll results: WiFi beats WWAN

Jkontherun_poll_1_2

The results are in with over 230 reader votes. I was actually surprised at the results; I thought WiFi would have won out over WWAN by a larger margin....say 75% to 25%. Turns out that WiFi was the integrated radio of choice by 61% of the voters, while 39% would take WWAN as their only choice.

As for me, I'm going to hold off on any swapping of the WiFi card in my UMPC at the moment. First of all, I no longer have a dedicated EV-DO data plan, I only have EV-DO as an add-on service with my XV 6700 and I doubt I can use the radio from that! ;) Thanks for the votes and if there's a question worth asking the readers on Friday, we'll have another poll. If you've got a poll idea, don't be shy: just click on my cartoon head to shoot me your question via e-mail. If the general readership would benefit from the question, we just might use it!

Poll reminder: integrated WiFi or WWAN?

Q1p_internal_wifi_radio In case you missed it on Friday, we kicked off a reader poll that will run until tomorrow. I'll post the results on Wednesday, use Thursday to consider a new poll question and post a new one on Friday. The question this time around relates to your preference for integrated Internet connectivity on a mobile device. When I recently cracked open my UMPC, I realized that the WiFi card was removable and I was considering a swap with an EV-DO card. I'm still on the fence with that, but it lead to the question:

If you could only choose one integrated radio for your mobile computer, would it be one for WiFi or one for WWAN connectivity? Hop on over to the poll and vote!

Friday poll - choose one: integrated WiFi or WWAN

Free polls from Pollhost.com
If you could only choose one integrated radio for your mobile computer, which would it be?
WiFi   WWAN (EV-DO or HSDPA)

I mentioned this yesterday, but the more I think about it, the more I think a poll might be in order. When I had my UMPC cracked open yesterday for some RAM swaps, I was looking at the PCI Express mini slot that holds the wireless chipset. I know that some EV-DO and HSDPA modems use the same PCI Express mini factor and was thinking about which would be more important to me: integrated WiFi or integrated WWAN? Everyone's needs are different of course, but when I'm out and about, I'm usually not at or near a WiFi hotspot, so I'll be voting for WWAN. I could live with a smallish USB dongle for WiFi at home if I needed to; having lower bandwidth speeds but increasing connection availability by magnitudes is more appealing to me personally.

Have at it in the voting for a few days and we'll report back what the mobile consensus was!
