jkOnTheRun: OTR with Tablet PCs Podcast

The last OnTheRun with Tablet PCs podcast is big news

You may have listened to the final OnTheRun with Tablet PCs podcast by now.  The podcast that I did with Marc Orchant came to an end with the untimely death of Marc earlier this month.  I expected heavier than normal listenership due to its being the final production but I couldn't figure out until this morning why it has been even heavier than expected.  Messing around on the web as I usually do I found this which I believe explains the high listenership:

Otr_tpc_reuters

This is gratifying because it shows how respected Marc's reputation was in not only the tech world but in the major news outlets.  Awesome!

Otr_tpc_cover_art_new This is the final episode of OnTheRun with Tablet PCs podcast that has enjoyed a run of over two years.  Marc Orchant and I had realized that we could not continue to do the show with our busy schedules and were planning a final show when Marc passed away.  I still wanted to do a final show to thank all of our listeners who have followed the show over its long run so this final show is a mix of highlights from the entire show history.  Mixing the show was difficult for me to do but I wanted to give the listeners one last listen at the wit and genius of Marc Orchant.

Thanks for supporting us and goodbye Marc, my friend.

Special thanks to Tiedye Keith for the great song "Vulnerable" with vocals by Tony Lindsay of Santana.  As stated by my friend T Lewis, great cartoonist from the Over The Hedge comic strip, the song Vulnerable has never had such meaning as it does now.

OnTheRun with Tablet PCs podcast #40- Marc's back!

Listen here ( MP3, 17.7 MB, 51 minutes) or

Subscribe to the show with this link  (RSS)

Otr_tpc_cover_art_new Marc Orchant and James Kendrick are back with show #40, yes, Marc is back for this show!  Our hosts have a typically far-ranging discussion that covers diverse topics relating to the Tabletscape.  They look analytically at the big news this week of the Acer/ Gateway merger and how this might impact the Tablet PC space.  Dell is entering the Tablet market later this year and the impact on the enterprise market is fodder for meaningful discussion.  Marc wants to know when we're going to see an application that is fitting of the capabilities of the Tablet PC and laments the fact we haven't seen one yet.

Tablet PCs aren't penetrating the enterprise much but employees of those enterprises see the benefits of the Tablet immediately upon exposure.  Maybe Dell will help penetrate that market so employees can get their hands on them.

James is testing the HP 2710p Tablet PC and discusses how this Tablet straddles the enterprise and consumer space.  Does the 2710p stack up?  Inquiring minds want to know.  The conclusion the hosts reach is that the trackstick is "flatly nubby". You have been warned.

Eric Mack interviewed Marc a while back and examined the contents of Marc's mobile gear bag and has posted a series of podcasts on his web site.  The podcasts are well worth a listen so go grab them without further adieu.

Marc discusses his new blogging gig at BlogNation and the upcoming Office 2.0 conference where industry luminaries are meeting to discuss the mobilization of Web 2.0.  Marc will be covering the conference on BlogNation and I'm sure he'll come back with some great insights for future shows.

Otr_tpc_cover_art_new Marc Orchant and James Kendrick are back with show #39, no wait, Marc's not here!  Marc had technical difficulties that made recording impossible but we both agreed that it was important to produce a show since it's been, like, forever since we did one.  Marc sends his regrets but he'll be back for the next show.

Congratulations to Marc for his new blogging gig at BlogNation, a new startup blog network that looks like a promising source of useful information.  They will be successful with Marc on board, that's for sure.

This show focuses on the state of the Tabletscape with a look at the new Tablets that have appeared so far this year and a look forward to what we can expect for the last half.  The discussion looks at Tablets first and then at UMPCs to cover the whole inkscape.

OnTheRun with Tablet PCs podcast #38- all about the Lenovo x61 Tablet

Subscribe to the show with this link  (RSS)

Otr_tpc_cover_art_new Marc Orchant and James Kendrick both have recently picked up Lenovo ThinkPad x61 Tablet PCs and in show #38 discuss the x61 from stem to stern.  James has the SXGA+ (1440x1040) screen and Marc has the MultiTouch XGA screen and the two compare the virtues of each.

James' x61 has the Intel Turbo Memory option, which is a flash memory cache designed to speed up disk access and program loading.  Marc has the integrated WWAN option instead.  Join our hosts for a roundabout conversation that covers all aspects of the first ThinkPad Tablet PC with the Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo processor.

Both hosts discuss how they used different methods to get the information and settings from their old Tablet PC over to the ThinkPad.  James used the Belkin Easy Transfer cable and Marc used the included Lenovo System Migration Assistant to accomplish the same thing.  The Belkin is available for use on non-ThinkPad PCs.

One of the most useful utilities you will find for any PC is Anagram and the two discuss the latest version which is now Vista and Outlook 2007 compatible.  You will also hear that the program has been optimized for the Tablet PC.

Otr_tpc_cover_art_new Marc Orchant and James Kendrick hit the ground running in show #37 and device reviews are the order of the day as the dynamic duo discuss the HP tx1000 Entertainment PC and the Lenovo ThinkPad x60 with the multi-touch screen.  Both devices are touchscreen convertibles and you'll find a rousing discussion of the merits of a convertible notebook with a touchscreen.  Is the tx1000 a good Tablet PC?  Listen and find out.

Mindjet announced the release of the next version of the hosts' favorite Tablet PC application and since Marc has been using it for a while you'll find out all you need to know about the next version of MindManager, Pro 7. Otr_tpc_cover_art_new Marc Orchant and James Kendrick are back with show #36 and shout-outs are in order all around with the shipping of Marc's book the Unofficial Guide to Outlook 2007, a must read for all Outlook users.  The shout-outs continue with this show dedicated to the newest Tablet PC MVP, Kevin Tofel!  Well deserved and long overdue.  Next up on the shout-out list is Josh Einstein who has released the OneNote Calendar utility that is a must-have for all OneNote users.  The dynamic duo wax poetically about the Asus R2H, one of the most capable UMPCs out there. Another shout-out goes to Warner Crocker for his relentless Vistamization of his Asus UMPC.  Marc professes love for the Lenovo ThinkPad x60t convertible tablet and tells us why.  Shout-out # whatever goes out to Michael Scherotter formerly of Mindjet who recently joined Microsoft. JK is hotly awaiting the availability of the new Motion LE1700 slate Tablet PC and discusses why.  JK forgets which podcast he's doing for a split-second, can you find it?

Kevin mentioned Podlinez and the cool way you can listen to the latest episode of the MobileTechRoundup podcast on your cell phone and I tried it out and aside from the long distance call it's really cool.  I visited Podlinez a few minutes ago and was amazed to see this:

Of course, the jkOnTheRun Audio Edition have been strictly video for months so I'm not sure what you'll get if you dial that one but it's pretty cool to have 3 podcasts that folks can dial up on their phone.

It's show # 31 and Marc Orchant and James Kendrick love Vista on their Tablet PCs but there are some gotchas lurking if you are not careful.    James loves Internet Explorer 7 on his UMPC and tells us how to get the ability to use the TIP in web forms back.  Marc shares a method to get Hotmail Plus email into Outlook without all those pesky notifications.  Marc's wife has a new 20" iMac and Marc wants to put Vista on it.  Is the Aero Glass UI in Vista worth the overhead?  Find out what the Inking Duo have to say about that.  Congratulations to the five finalists in the GottaBeMobile essay contest to win a Motion LS800 Tablet PC.  Fellow geek Matt Miller is one of those finalists- big shout out to Matt (aka palmsolo)!  James is impressed when Mickey Segal pulls an LS800 out of his sports jacket pocket in Boston.  Asus is getting everyone excited with their two new entries- the R2H UMPC and the R1F 13.3" Tablet PC (OnlyUMPC has a good review of the R2H).  Marc is impressed with the Mac Office Project Center- why can't we have the same thing on the Windows side?   Neither inker likes the Business Contact Manager for Outlook but it could be a lack of dedication to make it work.  James and Kevin Tofel are celebrating over 3 million visitors to jkOnTheRun and James leaks some information about a big giveaway coming up.

Marc Orchant and James Kendrick are back with show #27 after a very long, unrestful hiatus and we have some catching up to do.  The latest build of Vista seems to be making a lot of people happy, especially Tableteers like Kevin Tofel.  Everyone must be aware of the big battery recall going on now affecting Dell, Sony, and Apple customers.  Hey, these are the three big OEMs who don't make Tablet PCs.  Hmmm, coincidence?  I think not.  Marc is loving the new Object Desktop 2007 for simulating Vista Glass on his XP Tablet.  Matt Miller visits Mobile Tech Manor and watches my HP tc1100 die.  HP warranty service came to the rescue and in just a few hours the tc1100 came home feeling all better.  James used a Sony U71 with the 5 inch screen as a replacement while waiting for the return of the tc1100 and the experience has him jonesing for a UMPC.

Does the Asus R2H really have a screen resolution of 1280x768, a first for a UMPC.  James may have his hands on a Samsung Q1 with a flash memory hard drive.  The two new TabletKiosk eo UMPCs look pretty sweet and the one with the Pentium M gives Marc and James pause for consideration.  We would never tether our Palm Treos to our Tablets since that would violate the Terms of Service (TOS).  Marc gets a Palm Treo 700p and to his surprise finds out he now has EVDO coverage.  Can you use OneNote Mobile with a TAblet PC to help you move?  TabletKiosk is hitting the road to show off their new UMPCs.  Allegiance Technology Partners is throwing a Tablet PC Webinar soon so don't forget to sign up if you want to participate.

Marc Orchant and James Kendrick are back with show #25! Tracy Hooten goes slate.  James rants on the lack of UMPC advertising- history repeats itself.  Marc and James offer two good ways to easily enable Flicks on touch screen Tablet PCs like UMPCs.

On this show there's a podcast first as we euthanize a dog on the air (just kidding).  Marc has a new gig with Foldera and we discuss how his mobile computer needs might change with the new project.  The question comes up slate versus convertible versus UMPC and Marc explains his thoughts what he might be looking for soon, and if you are a regular listener you might be surprised.  James might be looking for a new slate and likes the Electrovaya Scribbler 3100, not a UMPC.  Marc and James both take a poke at junkware that comes with downloadable software.  Dell provides an option on their online store to pay extra to get a new device with no junkware pre-installed, which is important as Dell is rumored to be working on a UMPC.

Marc Orchant and I are back with a special show #22! We have a distinguished guest, Joel Rasmussen, the producer of a documentary film soon to be released nationally in the US.  Before the Music Dies is a unique look at the independent music industry and promises to be a great film for music lovers.  The film features commentary from such music greats as Dave Matthews, Erikah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Branford Marsalis and Elvis Costello and was screened at the recent SXSW festival in Austin.  Joel is an interesting person to chat with and we had a lot of fun talking about music and the big label music industry that makes it so difficult for good indies to get a career going.

Tablet enthusiasts and regular listeners who are wondering what we are doing talking about music on the OnTheRun with Tablet PC show can rest easy.  Joel discusses how he used his Tablet PC and MindManager during the making of the film and describes at length how the combo enable him to conduct better meetings with good results.  He is using an older Gateway M275 Tablet PC so we have a chat about what he should be looking at for an upgrade.  It is a good show with never a dull moment so give it a listen and see if you agree.  Thanks to Joel for coming on the show with us and we wish him all the best with his film, Before the Music Dies.  Keep up with the film and the tour schedule on the official web site.

Marc Orchant and James Kendrick talk about the Tablet PC news of the week in this episode of OnTheRun with Tablet PCs.  TEO 3.0 is in beta!  Video reviews and screencasts have erupted in the Tabletscape and we point out a few of the most recent ones.  Marc tells us why the Gateway M280 is a very nice Tablet PC and James talks about the TabletKiosk eo UMPC.  Is a new ThinkPad Tablet PC coming?  Loren Heiny puts the Tablet OS on an iMac, really.  Marc explains why he is not impressed with the OQO he is using– will a UMPC fill his needs?

Marc Orchant and I are back with this week's stroll down Tablet Lane.  Listener John Lange let us know that the Fujitsu P1510D is now available in MicroCenter retail stores and we discuss that a bit.  Thanks for that tip, John.  DialKeys is all the buzz on Origami devices but did you know it's already been shipping on the Fujitsu?  Marc has just returned from a trip to a GTD seminar and fills us in on what's happening with Eric Mack who also attended.  We want to see that home-brew battery pack, Eric.  Marc's trip gave him ample opportunities to demo the Tablet PC to a number of people and let him generally annoy the flight crew on his flight.  Lastly, we have a good discussion about Office 2007 and what it brings to the pen and slate for Tablet owners.

UPDATE:  John Lange did indeed pick up the Fujitsu and has sent us these photos of the Fuji alongside his Portege 3505 and Nokia 770 (click to enlarge):

Marc Orchant and I take a different tack with this show and address some very thoughtful questions from listener Rob Halligan.  Rob wants to know how to keep his desktop, smartphone, and soon to be purchased Tablet PC or UMPC all synchronized so his PIM data and files will be with him everywhere he goes.  His questions get the two of us into a discussion of Office 2007, how to keep files and information better organized, and Marc drops the bomb about the Outlook 2007 book he is writing for Wiley.  Wow, what a show!  We even presented the first Golden Slate award for best special effects (or something to that effect) in a Tablet PC related video demo.

Rob's thoughtful questions got him a copy of the More Space book from Marc so you never know what might happen.  Get those questions and/or ideas for future shows to Marc and I.  Rob did.
