jkOnTheRun reviews- FlyBook V331 & Fujitsu P1610 (YouTube Edition)

SInce posting our YouTube video reviews is so easy I decided to post a couple of our most popular video reviews again in case anyone missed them.  This is Kevin’s review of the FlyBook V33i:

Here is the second post popular (rated by downloads) in the YouTube edition:

jkOTR Mobile Media Edition 30: The Origami Experience

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

VGA iTunes compatible version (MP4 format, 640 x 480, 87.4 MB,13 minutes)

VGA Windows Media Player version (WMV format, 640 x 480, 71 MB, 13 minutes)

Icon_128x128_1The Microsoft Origami Project team was generous enough to provide us the forthcoming Origami Expereience software and we give you a quick tour. Unlike the original Origami interface, I think I'll be using this new one on my UMPC running Vista. You'll see how everything is accessible and usable without a stylus and the performance is nothing short of astounding!

Watch the brief video and then watch for the Origami Experience software to become available around Vista launch time!

jkOTR Mobile Media Edition 29: Fujitsu's Stylistic ST5112 slate Tablet

Jkotr_mme

VGA iTunes compatible version (MP4 format, 640 x 480, 299 MB, 44 minutes)

VGA Windows Media Player version (WMV format, 640 x 480, 242 MB, 44 minutes)

Icon_128x128_1What a powerhouse! The Fujitsu Stylistic ST5112 is all power and all slate. The 12.1-inch Tablet PC with the Core Duo processor runs for hours and hours After using the slate for a few weeks, I share some of the following aspects:

  • Complete walk around of the device
  • Thoughts on the pen and single speaker
  • Skype demo with the dual array microphone
  • Viewing angle of the screen and usage of the VGA out capabilities
  • Hardware buttons
  • Using the fingerprint sensor
  • Covering the included applications
  • Demonstrating the "warm" battery swap
  • Final thoughts

Three quick production notes:

  1. Lighting was a tad poor in my office studio, so the brightness isn't what we'd normally like to provide; I apologize.
  2. Due to a lack of sunlight, I had to do a separate demo of the view anywhere screen on a different day; you'll see this in the final two minutes of the video. I nominate this segment as the "worst demo of a great screen. ever."
  3. We now have a QVGA version of the video up on our YouTube channel if you want a lower-resolution version streamed.

A special thanks goes out to Allegiance Technology Partners for loaning us the Fujitsu Stylistic ST 5112 Tablet PC!

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition gets a home makeover

You asked for it and you've got it.  All of our video reviews going forward will now be available in two formats.  The full (VGA) version will now be produced in MP4 format, meaning those of you (like me) who use iTunes as your podcatcher will be able to get it right in iTunes.  Just subscribe to the jkOnTheRun Audio Edition using this button if you haven't already.

Itunes_subscribe_button

We will also produce a smaller bandwidth-friendly QVGA version in WMV format so you can get it the same way you've always used.  Since most of our podcasts are now in video we will change the name to jkOnTheRun Mobile Media Edition to reflect that fact.  The most recent video #28 has already been produced in MP4 format if you want to test it out in iTunes, just go to the show post and give it a shot.

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #28- Fujitsu P1610 video review

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #28 here (WMV format, 320 x 240, 192MB, 52 minutes)

For the bandwidth-conscious, there's a low-res version too. (WMV format, 320 x 240, 94 MB).

Jk_icon_medium_3Hold your horses!  Before you get all excited because you missed show #27 just hold on and listen a minute.  It seems that running off the production crew in show #25 was a very bad move on my part and although this would be show #27 it's labeled all over as show #28.  It really is show #27 so you haven't missed a thing, just pretend the last show was #27 and everything will be all right.

This show is a video overview of the new Fujitsu P1610 Tablet PC and I think once you've seen this baby in action you'll see why I like it so much.  It's a mini-Tablet PC with an 8.9" touchscreen displaying 1280 x 768 and in the video you'll see why it provides a complete Tablet PC experience without an active digitizer.  You'll also see the first look at the port replicator and extended battery that provides 6 hours of ink time.

Enjoy the show and leave us some feedback about the Fujitsu.

Special thanks to Allegiance Technology Partners for supplying me with the review unit used in this video.  Visit their web site and see all the Tablety goodness they offer!

QVGA video of the FlyBook review now available

Flybook_9Sorry for the delay, but if you passed on our 216 MB video review of the FlyBook, we do have a 95 MB QVGA version available for you now. Think of it as one quarter of the screen size and storage space but with double the pleasure and panache. Or just download it because you put off the VGA download; we don't care. ;) Look at it this way: my ugly mug is only 1/4th the size....just like the little picture here. Oh, we're just soooooo clever.....

Get all your fave podcasts over the phone

Kevin mentioned Podlinez and the cool way you can listen to the latest episode of the MobileTechRoundup podcast on your cell phone and I tried it out and aside from the long distance call it's really cool.  I visited Podlinez a few minutes ago and was amazed to see this:

Podlinez

Of course, the jkOnTheRun Audio Edition have been strictly video for months so I'm not sure what you'll get if you dial that one but it's pretty cool to have 3 podcasts that folks can dial up on their phone.

Icon_128x128_1After spending two weeks with the Dialogue FlyBook V33i on loan from iCube, we figured it as time to share the experience with a video review. Topics we cover:

  • Complete walk around of the device
  • The excellent case
  • Using the integrated WWAN capabilities for phone calls and Internet
  • Comparing a native 1024 x 600 screen to a non-native screen, i.e.: the Q1
  • FlyBook Control Center
  • Keyboard usage and thoughts
  • Mouse / joystick controls
  • Alternatives to the Tablet PC OS and applications
  • Touchscreen vectoring demonstration; how well does the V33i deal with palm rejection?
  • Overall specs and final thoughts
  • Stay tuned after the credits for a special "short feature".

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #25- Samsung Q1 SSD in use

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #25 here (WMV format, 640 x 480, 275 MB, 42:43 minutes)

The Samsung Q1 SSD is the Korean model of the Q1 that has no hard drive.  It has a blazing fast 32 GB solid state disk instead and iis the device I use every day in my work.  Well, you can see for yourself in this video shot in living color.  I try to show the Q1, lovingly named Flash, going through the paces I normally use it for daily and I hope it gives a little insight into how I can use such a small device with a little screen to be really productive.  Enjoy the show and let us know what you think.

I apologize for the buzzing noise in the background.  It was not there until the WMV file was spit out and too late for me to fix it.

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #24 - Vista RC2 on a Samsung Q1 UMPC

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #24 here (WMV format, 640 x 480, 227 MB, 40:44 minutes)

UPDATE: For our QVGA little-friends, we have a 320 x 240 version video as well. 106 MB; great taste AND less filling! Just click the link above.

Yes, I've been hard at work trying to get Vista RC2 fully functional on the Q1 UMPC. Vista on its own is quite stable; it's the little Samsung and touchscreen nuances that took some effort. So how does it work? What's the performance like? Obviously, I can't show every Vista feature in a short video (or even a large one apparently), so here's a walkthrough of some features:

  • Vista startup with sound and touchscreen (with some workarounds)
  • Quick overview of the system tray icons
  • Screen calibration
  • Native TIP and the floating tip
  • Vista search and Start
  • New York Times Reader
  • Windows Journal
  • Windows Media Center for audio, games and video
  • Windows Mobile Device Center and PDANet; didn't work this time...that's the nature of doing a video I guess! ;)
  • Speech Recognition demo
  • Standby and Resume time
  • Oops! I almost forgot the Screen Rotation and Screen Resolution switcher!

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #23 - iTunes Movies on a UMPC

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #23 here (WMV format, 640 x 480, 60.6 MB, 11:02 minutes)

Icon_128x128With the new Apple announcements today, it became apparent to me that the new iTunes Movies would be a nice marriage of Microsoft Windows based hardware and Apple software. I decided to download both iTunes 7 as well as a movie. Initial thoughts:

  • 640 x 480 resolution is pretty solid on a UMPC device
  • The new iTunes interface is very slick and usable
  • Audio quality of the movies is very good
  • People have to realize we're taking evolutionary steps towards downloadable high-def content; this was the next evolutionary step due to bandwidth and infancy of the high-def display market which is just now coming of age.
  • I'd prefer to watch a downloaded VGA movie on a UMPC as opposed to carrying an optical drive and packaged content.

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #22 - A trio of Vaja custom cases

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #22 here (WMV format, 320x240, 38.9 MB, 15:35 minutes)

Kevin_2006_100pix_1I just got a new DV camcorder so why not put it to the test? Vaja Cases was kind enough to send me three custom cases for devices that I have, so what could be better than a video review? In this brief review I get to show off custom cases for:

  • The Apple iPod nano
  • The Motorola RAZR V3 phone
  • My XV6700 Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone; this case will fit any HTC Wizard or HTC Apace device

Vaja Cases are definitely upper tier cases as these three cases start at $55, $55 and $65 respectively. Are they worth the money? You'll have to watch the video to see if they and to hear my thoughts!

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #21- Mobile PC recovery strategies

Listen to jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #21 here 7.0 MB, 20 minutes)

Jkcoverart_2_11This show it's back to the basics with a pure audio podcast that looks at recovery strategies for mobile PCs that do not have an optical drive or in some cases a keyboard.  I offer some common sense strategies for preparing now for the unthinkable crash that leaves your UMPC/ Origami, Tablet PC, or other ultra-portable unable to boot.  Instead of having a brick on your hands these tips might let you get back up and running.  If you have your own tips and advice for recovering an unresponsive device please leave them in the comments to share with others.

Fred Langa's articles on InformationWeek covering Windows XP recovery methods are mentioned on this show.

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #20- JK unboxes the Sony UX50

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #20 here (WMV format, 640x480, 246 MB, 44 minutes)

Jk_icon_100pix_4OK, the video file is huge but I wanted to capture the size and the spirit of the moment.  There is nothing quite like opening a new gadget for the first time and let's face it, the Sony Vaio UX50 Micro PC is about as special as it gets.  With 1024x600 resolution playing on a screen of 4.5 inches you need the extra video to really show the device.  I had an invisible audience who wanted to remain out of the video but the coolness of the Sony drew him in as the video progressed.  All sorts of activity was going on in the background and the Treo wouldn't stop ringing but that's the way it is in Mobile Tech Manor.

Sony_ux_003

This video is an overview of the UX50 device and I promise a full video review showing what this PC can do is forthcoming.  Enjoy the show and let me know what you think.

jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #19 - Usage scenarios for the Samsung Q1 UMPC

Jkbanner_audio_edition_1_1

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #19 here (WMV format, 320x240, 85.8 MB, 34:28 minutes)

Kevin_2006_100pix_1OK, we won't win any Academy Awards for this video. I'm still limited to a 1.3 MP webcam and if you've ever tried to capture an LCD image from a webcam, well, let's just say it isn't pretty. However, if there are any DV recorder manufacturers looking for a fair and honest review, maybe we should talk! ;)

What I tried to do was go through some of the many great scenarios you provided us and then let the Q1 try and handle them. Keep that in mind as you're watching the often dark video; the point here isn't to show the screen in crystal-clear imagery, but to see if the Q1 can handle the everyday work that you asked about. Remember: we're looking at the device as both concept and for hands-on usage. Having said that, here's some of the items you'll see in no particular order:

  • Booting up into AVStation Now for media playback.
  • Booting into Windows XP to show the time-frame of a boot up.
  • Putting the device into Sleep mode and restoring it back to show the speed.
  • Inking in OneNote 2007, Outlook 2007 and Windows Journal.
  • Handwriting recognition in Windows Journal.
  • A quick stop into MindJet's MindManager (Note: I had an issue in the video, but it wasn't the fault of the software or of the Q1. Second Note: notice that I said it was my fault without actually saying it was my fault?!?)
  • Brief look at DialKeys and the Microsoft TouchPack.
  • Surfing in IE7 via the LAN.
  • Pulling the LAN cable out and surfing the web by using an XV6700 EV-DO Windows Mobile phone via a Bluetooth connection.
  • An overview of the Samsung screen rotation

Q1_video

We'll likely have some additional videos of other scenarios for the Q1, but 34 minutes of a webcam video is probably more than you can bear for now!

This is the official "live" unboxing of the device and I try to show you every component of the Q1 packaging and contents. Kevin_2006_100pix_1 Some folks might have already seen this 15 minute video review on my personal blog site; if you have please accept my apologies. James and I thought that the jkOTR audience at large might not have seen this, so consider this the Internet's first ever "repeat". Protecting mobile devices is often overlooked, but after spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a device for daily usage, consider a few extra dollars for a solid case. For my XV6700, I pre-ordered a case from Sena Cases. I've used their cases for several years with multiple devices, mainly because of the excellent and thoughtful design. In this "case", I'm happy with my purchase, but have a few gotchas to point out so you can make an informed decision.

I can't remember the last time a genre of mobile device created quite the buzz that the Origami/ UMPC has generated.  Show #14 is a video overview of the TabletKiosk eo v7110 UMPC, generously provided by the good folks at TabletKiosk.  I only had the device for a couple of days but wanted to give a thorough overview of the hardware, software, and potential of the UMPC using the eo and a video review seemed the best way to do that.

I hope you enjoy this video and apologize for the audio quality.  The video camera I was using was generating some internal noise that I could not hear until I encoded the video. You can still hear the audio track OK, it's just a little annoying.  :(   Feel free to shoot me any questions about the eo that you don't see answered in the video and I'll answer them if I can.

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #13 here (WMV format, 800x600, 47.7 MB, 30 minutes)

Jkcoverart_2_7_1

Office 2007 has been given a total facelift over the previous version, and no doubt you've seen pictures and videos of the new "ribbon" interface. I have been using it for a few weeks and the more I use it the more I realize that a lot of the interface enhancements make the various Office applications much easier to use with the pen on a Tablet PC.  This video demonstrates how those UI changes makes my work on a Tablet PC more productive, and in the video I show how a lot of these changes will be a boon for Origami device owners.  Note that Office 2007 is an early beta and will likely change from what is demonstrated in this video by release time.

The video was recorded totally onscreen using Camtasia Studio and I hope you enjoy it.  One caveat I should mention, drop-down menus from the ribbon interface are not currently picked up by Camtasia and do not appear in the video.  In every instance in the demo I tried to make sure and talk you through what was in the menu that you couldn't see.  At the end of the day I didn't think that hampered the video usefulness so I am releasing this demo anyway.  I am sure that TechSmith will update Camtasia so these menus can be recorded when Office 2007 is actually released.

During the recording of this video I got an amusing Skype interruption by someone well known in the Tablet PC community.  I'll send a Channel 9 guy to the first person who submits a comment to the show post with the correct name of the caller.

    Auto-transcribing podcasts?

I think it would be really cool if someone could come up with a way to automatically derive written transcriptions from podcasts. This would work similar to speech recognition programs but it needs to be speaker independent to be effective, kind of like closed-captioning used by TV stations. The purpose for producing written transcripts would be two-fold- make podcasts available to those in the community who are deaf and unable to access the information shared in the many podcasts now available and to make the shows searchable once the transcripts are published.

I would love to hear from those in a position who have thoughts about possible solutions that could be used from existing technology. I am willing to work with anyone using any of the podcasts I produce as a test case, with the hope of eventually using this on a wide range of podcasts. Please contact me if you have any ideas along these lines, or post a comment here. Let's see what we can come up with as a community effort.

    Meetup at CES?

I will be attending CES from January 4 - 7th and would love to hook up with jkOnTheRun readers who will be there. Drop me a line to let me know and we'll try to get together. Podcast buddies Kevin Tofel and Dave Ciccone from MobileTechRoundup will also be there and it will be great fun. Maybe I'll get some good podcasting done live from the show floor. I'll certainly be doing a ton of blogging about new gadgets. See you there!

New location for jkOnTheRun Audio Edition

I forgot about Feedburner's only recognizing posts (and podcasts) that appear on the blog's front page so I have created a separate site for jkOnTheRun Audio Edition to avoid earlier shows dropping off Feedburner and subsequently iTunes.  Please make a note of the new blog for the podcast and you will need to use this link to subscribe with your podcatcher of choice.

Thanks and keep your podcatcher's eyes open for the next podcast.

Introducing the jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #1

Jkcoverart_1 Listen to jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #1   (7.21 MB, 10 minutes)

That's right, you read that correctly, the jkOnTheRun Audio Edition.  I have been kicking the idea around for a while for doing a short (5 - 10 minute) podcast here on jkOnTheRun  With all the other work and podcasting that I do I knew that for this to work it had to be quick and easy and since I just picked up an M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 professional handheld recording system I decided I can jump right in.  This first show was recorded on the M-Audio and you can judge for yourself how it sounds.

Microtrack_big I intend for the jkOnTheRun Audio Edition to be a regular show covering just one topic at a time so each podcast will be short enough that you can easily grab it and listen without giving up a big chunk of your day.  This show is an audio review of the M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 recorder so if you're interested in a professional quality field recorder then give it a listen.  The Microtrack has an MSRP of $499 so it's not cheap but you can find it on the web for much less than that- I found it for $399 so I grabbed it.

Who knows what future shows will cover, there will be a lot of mobile tech topics (naturally) but I may veer off that path from time to time to discuss items in the news.  I hope you enjoy this first show, please leave plenty of feedback and suggestions because I really want to make this your show.
