How to use Windows Mobile Internet Sharing for a modem

Another quick-hit video since I'm getting ready to walk out the door: I've got a 2.5 hour drive to New York City for tonight's Digital Experience show and I'm not going to worry about WiFi availability. If they offer it, great; if not, I'll use the Internet Sharing feature in Windows Mobile 6. This feature is also available in WM 5 with AKU 3. You remember this function, right? It's the one that Microsoft includes which I'm hoping none of the cellular carriers mess with.

How easy is it to use the phone as a modem with Internet Sharing? It almost couldn't be easier, but if you're new to the whole "tethering" aspect of using a phone as a modem, I'll show you just how quick and easy it is over Bluetooth. The same concept applies for a USB cable connection if you'd prefer that method. OK, gotta run....I have a "Long and Winding Road" ahead of me this afternoon. ;)

Bloody hell. It's in my patch and I never heard of it! I'm no so much interested in the -- yawn -- tech as I am the air conditioning and free food!

Man, it is BOILING in NYC today.

Be prepared to sweat outside!

I waited for you Mike but it got too hot outside. I'm in the AC now.

Kevin, do you have to initiate the "Join BT PAN" each time you want to get onto the Internet, or was the process you showed simply a one time setup and nothing more? The reason I ask is that I use BT DUN on my Treo 700P and it is seamless. Once it's setup, any time I try to connect to the Internet it will automatically look for the phone and establish the session. But it's pretty likely that my next device will be a WM unit and I was curious how seamless it is on those devices. Hopefully it's nothing more than a set it and forget it scenario. Thanks.

Bluetooth PAN stopped working for me when I installed Vista on the Q1. Can only tether through USB at the moment.
Using a Blackjack which is AKU3. So using ICS to get online.
What's the version of your Bluetooth drivers for the Q1?

Looks to be 5.1.2535.0 per the Vista Device Manager on the Broadcom radio. Microsoft BT Enumerator shows 6.0.6000.16386.

Alright. I updated all the Bluetooth drivers on my Q1. Now it's showing 5.1.2535.0. My phone still isn't showing up when you 'Join a Personal Area Network'. It has to be my phone. Going to try to update the firmware later and see how it goes.
This post here http://vowe.net/archives/008438.html
shows he updated the firmware to version i607UCGB4 (Mine is version i607UCFJE) and it worked for his Mac. I don't have a Mac with bluetooth around, so I'm just hoping it'll do the trick.
There's a leaked WM6 upgrade for the Blackjack floating around. But I'm reading it doesn't include the ICS application. People have been getting around it by messing with the registry and copying the ICS app from the Dash, but I'll just wait until there's an official WM6 firmware and hope ICS is included.

You could also try this application. Personally I find it works better. It converts a WM phone into a wifi access point using internet connection sharing.

Hope that helps.
