Microsoft Live Mesh tech preview hits Mac OS X

Livemeshmac

I got a tip off from the LiveSide folks earlier this week that we’d see it and they were spot on: the technical preview of Live Mesh for Mac is finally available. I’ve just pulled down the 6.8MB download and will have to kick the tires for a bit. My impressions of earlier "pre-preview" efforts were pretty encouraging so I’m expecting good things. Note that the download screen says "coming soon for mobile" as well. Could be that the Windows Mobile version will be following close behind, so keep an eye out.

If I understood the Microsoft Azure news out of PDC, Live Mesh is built upon the new development platform that’s the framework for Microsoft’s cloud effort. Just for a quick test of the cloud, I was able to add new files to a Live Mesh folder on my Mac and quickly saw them appear on the Samsung Q1UP. No luck yet with remote controlling one device from another over the Mesh… or the Azure cloud.

Kevin, I’m glad that you were able to get it to work. On my Mac, I keep getting a “500″ error whenever I try to sign on using the Mac Mesh client.

All of my Windows PCs have been updated to the new client software version and work with no problems.

I’m getting the 500 error, too. From the forums (http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/b8b13e8c-9d16-49f5-8982-afc35263bd7f) a number of people are getting that error.

I’ve updated my personal machine as well. I’m getting a new work PC (hopefully today, if I can trust the status email our helpdesk system mailed out) so I’ve held off on updating there.

Sorry the URL should be http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/b8b13e8c-9d16-49f5-8982-afc35263bd7f

Typepad included the trailing parenthesis by mistake. Maybe they should be reading Jeff Atwood’s blog. 8-) http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001181.html

You can get the WM6 cab file here.

Wmexperts got it yesterday - it had log in issues but was fixed today

Hmmm, so you will get the 500 error if your first name is Rick… :)

I did resolve the 500 error by doing a whole bunch of things, but I’m not sure which finally fixed it. Ultimately, after uninstalling Live Mesh, restarting my MacBook, re-downloading the Mac Mesh client using Safari (instead of Firefox) and reinstalling resolved the 500 error. I tried each one of these steps individually and could not resolve the error, but doing them all in sequence somehow worked.
