Firefox 3 releases today; get it early if you know where to look

Mozilladownloadday

Maybe I'll hold off just a few hours on the official Firefox 3 release. That should help the Mozilla folks with their Guinness Book of World Record attempt for the most downloads of a program in 24 hours. If you've been running a release candidate of Firefox and just can't wait, the executable files are up on the Mozilla FTP servers right here. Hmm... I wonder if I can grab it from the FTP site now and then download it later just to help those Mozilla folks out? I think I just might... Firefox is helping out in a big way with my web-only challenge: today begins the twelfth day without using client applications.

1) I hate crowds

2) Despite all the testing, there are bound to be Gotchas.

You lot sort of the Gotchas and I'll get it later.

I installed from the FTP. When FireFox starts up, the welcome page indicates it is Release Candidate 3 in the title bar. Maybe that's just left over. The Help > About doesn't indicate it is a release candidate.

It's the official version. The explanation is at http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2092

Is it supposed to be released today or not?!? I'm confused, is there a certain time it will officially be released?

Oop nevermind, answered my own question. 12 PDT, so another hour for me.

Downloads from the FTP site do not count for the record attempt.

Why don't you respect the wishes of the people who bring you Firefox??

"The files in the FTP directories of our mirrors are - for now - only meant to be used by our testers. We would appreciate it if our fans didn’t follow direct links there that they might see on sites like Digg, Reddit, or Neowin. Downloading them directly can harm our ability to distribute Firefox efficiently, and will also not be counted as part of our attempt to set a Guiness World Record for the most software downloads in a day."

I'm playing around with it now. I thought it was supposed to be really fast but it seems quite slow compared to IE7 or Opera. Also, too many Add-ons need upgrading and without them I find Firefox far too basic. Maybe it's just me but I've never understood all the excitement that Firefox generates.

No Tab Mix Plus means no go for me.
