Browser and device checkpoint of our readers

Browsers_2Graph_2

It's been a while since we last looked at the browser share of our audience and since Firefox 3 officially arrived yesterday, now might be a good time for a checkpoint of the last six months. A few interesting observations from the above (and other) data that I see.

  • Firefox has actually overtaken Internet Explorer
  • Safari has a respectable nearly 10% share. I suspect that most of these folks are on Macs, but there's a few iPhones in there too. Probably not too many Windows users running Safari.
  • Out of the Firefox users: 10% are already running a version of Firefox 3... sounds like we have a bunch folks that like betas and release candidates.
  • 72% of the IE folks are running IE7, but there's a fair amount still on IE6... 27.55% to be exact.
  • 80% of our Mac readers are running on the newer Intel platform... 20% are still holding on to their PowerPC devices.
  • We have to give a shout out to the 373 readers using Danger Hiptop and the 365 folks reading jkOTR with a Playstation 3. ;)
  • Out of the Mac readership, more folks actually use Safari than Firefox by a 3 to 2 ratio. Interesting!

Clearly, this information changes when you shift, extend or decrease the time frame, but I thought a six-month view might be worth the look. Regardless of how you get here and what you use, we appreciate it!

I am getting 61% on IE and over 50% on Vista but I will make sure I still cater for my one Windows ME reader :)

There was the hijack of Safari on windows through iTunes update so maybe that's another reason safari reached 10%.

georgi55: around 12% of our readership is Mac, so I think the Safari number isn't heavily influenced by Apple's attempt to get Safari on Windows devices. Besides, just having Safari installed (even if the user didn't initiate it) wouldn't count in these stats. The users would have to actually use Safari to hit the site, which is a conscious choice.

So what you're saying is that there are still a distressing percentage of poor souls who haven't discovered Opera 9.5? ;)

Safari browsing of your site has probably gone up since you guys joined the cult... ;)

Personally, I've been using Firefox since before there was a v1. There's been a few bumps along the way, but it's still my browser or choice. I'm running RC3 at the moment, which wasn't as good as RC1. Suppose I'll get out of beta today or tomorrow.

cr0ft: Opera accounts for 3.33% of our readers. Of that number, over half are using Opera 9.2x. Only 13% of the readers using Opera are on 9.5.

Dave, if James and I account for "10% of our readers", there's a BIG problem. ;)

I would only use Opera if it weren't for the random google errors.

I'm using Safari on Windows (XP, TabletPC Edition) as my default browser. Firefox is close second, but not my default. IE only when I really, really HAVE to...

Safari is in general the "fastest" of the three. FF 3 is now a very close second... but I just like the Safari UI, the look, the way bookmarks and feeds are implemented. It's a personal choice. Yes, I've had Macs before and used Safari there, but I'm Mac-less at the moment...
