jkOnTheRun Geek Session: More of the U110 and a surprise application
We haven't had a dual-chat about the Lenovo IdeaPad U110, so today I got a better look at it. James also has an advance look at some software that I'm sure folks will want when it gets released. If you surf the web on a handheld device, you'll want to check this out.

hmm, someone had a close encounter with a electric razor i suspect ;)

James,
Thanks for slamming/including me in your video :) I have to say you inspired me to try out Opera Mobile 9.5 even more on my upgraded (cough) Advantage. Keep up the great work guys.
I also was quite impressed by that U110 at CES and hope to get my hands on one to play with as well.

I would love to see a comparison with the new Skyfire browser. I'm using Skyfire now and it is INSANELY powerful. I can only hope that Opera 9.5 is just as good to encourage a whole new level of competition.
In fact, the one *negative* that I could put on Skyfire (this is a weird one) is that if I am looking for the mobile version of a webpage (Google for example), I get the full desktop version. But on a 5" device, Skyfire should be incredible.

The U110 is Lenovo's answer to Apple's MacBook Air.
I think it's a winning recipe - too bad it can't used to run OSX without hackery :/

I hope to give Skyfire a try on the Advantage. I haven't downloaded the current version yet.

Doesn't Skyline use servers to squish and reformat things? Opera doesn't, right?
And you two -- Fiend 1 & Fiend 2! You should be on your way to Guantanamo! Tech terrorists!!
But first, answer all my questions! Let's get our priorities straight here, after all.

Skyfire, not Skyline, uses servers to render the pages quickly and then feed them to the mobile device.

Sky-wutevah. So I was right! And I'm not even paying attention. Spooky, innit?

whats the closest to the u110 with touch/inking?
Posted by: solomon | May 08, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Hmm... that's a toughie, Solomon. If you're willing to forgo touch capability, I'd say the Toshiba R500 is a pretty comparable device: 12-inch display, 2.4-pounds starting weight, 11.1" x 8.5" x .77 to 1" in size. Processor is a little slower at 1.33 GHz however. Anyone else have any thoughts on a comparable device?

smaller and lighter would be a plus that's why i'm hesitating on the hp tx2000z series, how bout the 2710p or p1620 or anything coming up in the next 90 days.
Posted by: solomon | May 08, 2008 at 12:24 PM
The P1620 was just released a few months ago so there won't likely be a replacement in the next 90 days. Fujitsu is working on a new 13.3" tablet with passive digitizer and Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 25W). No word on release date.

James,
Were you ever able to get skype to work on the Advantage? I am actually considering purchasing one now. I want a windows mobile device but all the phones I try just are too small for my liking. With that browser it seems almost perfect. I love my OQO but battery life stinks and just a bit too heavy to seriously carry every where I go
