A very writing weekend
If it seems I have been largely missing in action this weekend it's because I have. I had deadlines on two articles for a major magazine and I had to keep my nose to the keyboard. I used the HP 2710p for the project and was continually reminded why it is such a great notebook/ tablet PC. It worked well no matter where I found myself working, the coffee shop, my office or on the back porch. The articles are now done and I am going to sleep now. Later.

Working even on the weekend, huh. You are really always on the run. =D I would definately like to read those articles. Which magazines?

You're a true trooper :) I'd like to know which magazines also! Do tell.

One device is all you need. I think it is the HP 2170p. It is the right size, has decent performance, and is a productive machine. Sometimes a device can be too small or too big to be productive. Too large (17" Macbook Pro) and it stays at home, too small keyboard (Fujitsu p1620) and typing speed suffers. The two device minimun with a weight more than your 3.5 pound HP 2710p does not make sense, unless the type of work you are doing fits that device for the entire workday (8 hours). Of course when you come home, a diffrent device is used. The ideal solution is using your HP 2710p with your Westinghouse monitor, External Hard drive, and port Replicator attatched to the HP printer, and Scanner. It becomes a problem, because you review so many devices, sometimes 5 or more at a time. The temptation to fit all of them in your gadget bag is overwhelming, but not practical. The decision, to take what bag or which device on what day is hard one. Somtimes the simply solution is not always the obvious one.

Jhall refers to using a portable computer with an external monitor.
Whenever I have tried this, I have found it unsatisfactory. I want the external monitor to duplicate what the screen of the portable shows. Unless the native resolution of the monitor is the same as that of the portable, you get a less-than-ideal quality on the external. If you adjust the resolution in Windows to suit the external monitor, then the portable screen typically doesn't show the whole desktop, and when you detach the portable from the monitor, you have to set the resolution back to suit the screen on the portable.
If anyone's got a good solution I'd be glad to hear it. The solution should require minimal fiddling with settings between using the portable as a portable, and using it with an external monitor.

Allan, I have never had that problem before. If I hookup an external monitor, I get the native resolution of the external, then it flicks back to the internal native res when you disable the external monitor.

Although James was working the weekend what I find so liberating about mobile tech is that you can literally work anywhere, when it suits your personal schedule, and I find this much less stressful than having strict work hours, especially where we can really make use of what would have been 'dead time', commuting and the like.
Compare that with even a few years ago where connectivity meant finding a fax machine or making a detour to the office. Sometimes I do find myself working on the weekend or an evening but this is freeing up personal time elsewhere.
