Samwise going under the knife today for 2 GB memory upgrade
Although the US Postal Service seems to have delivered my 6-cell battery to someone else, it was nice to see FedEx arrive early this morning with a 2 GB memory module. The standard 1 GB SODIMM is coming out of Samwise so he can get the 2 GB upgrade treatment later today. The procedure will be slightly different from the Q1 and Q1P upgrades due to the different form factor, so cross your fingers in the virtual waiting room. Once the surgery is over, he'll have some time to recover with Windows XP Tablet Edition for a short while. As soon as he's strong enough, we'll tackle the next phase of his metamorphosis by cleanly installing Windows Vista. No need to send cards or letters; I'm sure all will go well as I know the surgeon personally and have every confidence in his abilities. ;)

Any chance you will do a video to show the non-intellectual how to upgrade the ram?

I would appreciate a video like that also.

Hi Kevin,
Good luck with memory upgrade ;)
would be great if you can post a photo or video tutorial-bible..

Replacing the RAM module is not hard at all. I've done it myself with my Q1U.
BTW: Hugo Ortega did a tutorial video on that which illustrates the process very well. Highly recommended!

The Q1U is easier than the Q1UP.
The memory in the Q1UP is located behind the mother board so you have to open the case and unscrew the board to get to the memory chip.

Andreas,
The Q1UP is designed differently from the Q1U, and earlier models. The RAM chip is located on the under-side of the motherboard, meaning you have to remove a number of screws, and ribbon cables to get to it. I've removed the back cover of my Q1UP, but haven't removed the motherboard yet as my 2GB ram stick isn't here. Due to the delicate nature of the plastic parts, I'd prefer to do the 'surgery' as few times as is possible.
For those curious, this is what the Q1UP looks like with the back cover off: http://i25.tinypic.com/2prfach.jpg

The comments above about it being more difficult than the Q1U are dead on. I just completed the process and have a video upcoming. I was surprised to see that this was different from the Q1U, but it is. Took me at least 30 - 40 minutes.

Kevin, I'm curious. What advantage do you see in installing vista over xp in an ultra-mobile device?
From my personal experience with vista, I can't think of any, especially in a device where battery life and system responsiveness are paramount.

B, I think it's a matter of personal preference. The main reason is the better native support for Tablet PC and touch components. Battery life is very important but even if Vista uses up the battery a bit more, I should be OK with two 6-cell batteries. With 2 GB of RAM on my older Q1P, I found the system responsiveness with Vista to be acceptable. Again, personal preference.
